The Body-Sign Series
A monthly journey through the zodiac and the body
Hello Beautiful, and Welcome!
The Re-Aligned Journey™ is really about that ongoing process of returning to yourself, coming into right relationship with your body, your mind, your soul, and with the living world we are a part of. The Body-Sign Series is one way of walking that return, slowly, season by season, through the body itself.
Each month, as the Sun enters a new sign of the zodiac, we turn toward the region of the body that sign has long been linked with, and we listen for what it is asking of us. The celestial and the elemental, meeting in the temple of your own physiology.
Why This Series
I will admit something to you. For years I did not understand what being a Gemini meant. I was a social worker, a scientist of the psyche, and the zodiac felt like a language I had not been invited to speak. It was when my Human Design was shared with me in 2013 that the door first opened, and behind it, a question I could not put down: what if the cosmos and the body were never separate?
Since my awakening in October 2008, I have been navigating between the celestial and the elemental, the sky above and the earth below, and this series is where those two streams finally meet in one place.
My Sun in Gemini makes me a messenger between worlds. My Moon in Capricorn keeps my feet on the ground and my work structured. My Aquarius rising means I see differently, and I have stopped apologizing for it. I am not asking you to believe in astrology. I am asking you to come with an open curiosity, and to let your own body discern what rings true.
Which Zodiac Sign Rules Which Part of the Body?
People have mapped the twelve signs onto the human body for over two thousand years, running from the head down to the feet. Here is that map in three layers: the oldest written version, the fuller associations later astrologers added, and the emphasis this series holds each month.
| Sign | The Oldest Map | Later Associations | This Series |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Head | Face, eyes | Head, face, brain: the crown as antenna |
| Taurus | Neck | Throat, voice | Throat, neck, voice |
| Gemini | Shoulders and arms | Lungs, hands, nervous system | Arms, hands, lungs, nervous system |
| Cancer | Breast and chest | Stomach, bodily fluids | Chest, breasts, stomach |
| Leo | Sides and back | Heart, spine | Heart, spine, vitality |
| Virgo | Belly | Intestines, digestion | Digestion, intestines |
| Libra | Buttocks | Kidneys, lower back | Kidneys, lower back |
| Scorpio | Reproductive organs | Pelvis, bladder, colon | Reproductive organs, colon |
| Sagittarius | Thighs | Hips, legs | Hips, thighs |
| Capricorn | Knees | Bones, skin | Knees, bones, structure |
| Aquarius | Lower legs | Ankles, circulation | Calves, ankles, circulation |
| Pisces | Feet | Lymphatic system, extremities | Feet, lymphatic system |
A note on honesty: the sources do not all agree with one another, and they never have. The oldest map places Leo at the sides and back and Libra at the buttocks, while later traditions moved Leo toward the heart and Libra toward the kidneys. Rather than hide those shifts, this series holds both maps gently, the old and the newer, and follows where the body itself seems to resonate.
Where This Map Comes From
The idea that the zodiac is mapped onto the human body is very old. Its earliest surviving detailed form comes from the Roman poet Manilius, who wrote a long astrological poem called the Astronomica in the early first century CE. In it, he walks down the body one sign at a time, from Aries at the head to Pisces at the feet. Scholars call this map melothesia. Some scholars believe parts of the map were added to the poem later, and the idea appears to be older still: evidence traces it to Babylonian texts from the centuries before, and a similar map appears in an early Sanskrit astrology text, the Yavana Jātaka.
The map traveled far. It became the familiar Zodiac Man drawn in medieval medical books, consulted by physicians and barber-surgeons before treatments and bloodletting, when the Moon's position in a sign was said to mark the part of the body to be left undisturbed. Over the centuries, astrologers added organs and body systems to each sign, and some of these later additions shifted the original picture. Leo was given the sides and back in the oldest list but is now widely linked with the heart. Virgo moved from the belly toward the intestines, and Libra from the buttocks toward the kidneys and lower back.
Each sign also has a traditional ruling planet. The Moon rules Cancer and the Sun rules Leo. Each of the other five visible planets rules two signs, one on each side of the zodiac, so those signs become sisters. Mars rules both Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius. Modern astrologers later added the outer planets as rulers, giving Uranus to Aquarius, Neptune to Pisces, and Pluto to Scorpio.
One modern tradition, known as yogic astrology, carries this pairing into the spine. It places each planet and its two signs at one of the energy centers, or chakras, along the spine. Teachers in this tradition do not all agree on the placements, and other systems match chakras and signs differently. It is offered here as one lens, not a fixed rule.
How the Series Works
Each post is an invitation, not an assignment. A new one arrives each month as the Sun enters a new sign. Read it when the season turns, or whenever that month's region of the body starts speaking to you.
Every post follows the same three-beat rhythm, so your body can learn the shape of them the way it learns the shape of a session. First, a bit of real physiology, because your intelligent mind deserves real ground to stand on. Second, the Heart-Wave Breath, my practice pairing the physiological sigh with one hand on the heart and one hand on the womb space or belly, carried into that month's territory. Third, an open inquiry, a question to hold rather than answer.
Take a break and breathe love. Get yourself calm, centered, and connected, and let coherence deepen until it radiates as health through everything you do.
